He was born on 21 October 1983 in Oklahoma City, OK, USA, to Bob Williams and Jeannette Williams. His father, Bob, played basketball at Oklahoma Christian University and later even coached Junior-High School and High School basketball players.

College Career
Shelden has played college basketball for Duke University, Durham, North Carolina. He played for four seasons from 2002 to 2006.
During his time at Duke, Williams was a two-time consensus All-American, a two-time ACC Defensive Player of the Year, and a two-time ACC Player of the Year.
Moreover, he was the third player in ACC history to have 1,500 points, 1,000 rebounds, 350 blocks, and 150 steals. He retired from the team on 28 January 2007.
Professional Career
During the 2006 NBA Draft, Shelden was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks. In July, he signed a rookie scale contract with the Hawks. Moreover, he made his NBA debut in November, recording three rebounds and one block.
During a match against Milwaukee Bucks, he does a season-high 17 rebounds, alongside 16 points. In the next match, he scored a season-high 21 points, alongside ten rebounds.

In February 2009, he was traded again, and this time to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Later, in August 2009, he signed with the Boston Celtics and played for them until 2010.
During his time with the Celtics, he averaged 3.7 points and 2.7 rebounds per game. Williams then signed a one-year contract with the Denver Nuggets in July 2010, where he played for a season and averaged 4.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.
In 2011, Williams was traded to the New York Knicks in a three-way blockbuster deal involving the Minnesota Timberwolves that brought Carmelo Anthony to New York.
Williams then signed with the New Jersey Nets in December 2011, where he played for a season and averaged 4.6 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.
After his stint in the NBA, Williams signed a one-year contract with the French League champions Élan Chalon, averaging 11.3 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. In October 203, he got signed with Tianjin Ronggang in China.
