    Russell plays for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association. Moreover, he is a nine-time NBA All-Star and even earned the NBA Most Valuable Player Award in the 2016 and 2017 seasons.

    Russell is one of the two players in history to average a triple-double for a season. He also holds a record for most triple-doubles in a season.

    Russell Westbrook Early Life

    He was born on 12 November 1988 in Long Beach, California. His father’s name is Russell Westbrook Jr, and his mother’s name is Shannon Horton.

    Moreover, he also had a younger brother named Raynard. He attended Leuzinger High School, and after completing the school, he joined the University of California, Los Angeles, on a sports scholarship.

    Moreover, since childhood, he and his best friend Khelcey Barrs III hope to go to ULCA and play together. Unfortunately, Khelcey died in 2004 due to an enlarged heart during a pick-up game.

    Russell Westbrook Career

    High School and College Career

    Russell entered Leuzinger High School as a point guard. At that time, he weighed 140 pounds and stood only 5 ft 8 inches.

    However, he was not part of the school’s varsity team until his junior year. During his senior year, he grew to a height of 6 ft 3 inches.

    Moreover, during his senior year, he averaged 25.1 points, 8.7 rebounds, 3.1 steals, and 2.3 assists. Initially, Russell doesn’t get much attention from top college basketball programs.

    But when his height grew, and due to his average of more than 25 points per game, he became a solid college basketball prospect.

    Coach Ben Howland recruited Russell to play for the UCLA Bruins. So he declared all the offers and accepted the UCLA scholarship.

    He started his college career as a freshman in 2006. During that season, he was mainly used as a defender and energy player off the bench.

    In that season, he averaged 3.4 points, 0.8 rebounds, and 0.7 assists. Later on, in the next season, he was named the starter.

    Moreover, he finished that season by averaging 12.7 points, 3.9 rebounds, 4.7 assists, and 1.6 steals. Russell was even named as the Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year and All-Pac-10 Third Team. After his two years at UCLA, he decided to enter the 2008 NBA draft and forgo his final two years.

    Professional Career From (2008 – 2016)

    In the 2008 NBA Draft, he was selected by the Seattle SuperSonics. But later on, in July 2008, he became a part of the Oklahoma City Thunder.

    Russell recorded his first career triple-double with 17 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists in March 2009. Moreover, during that season, he averaged 15.3 points, 5.3 assists, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.3 steals.

    In the next season, he stepped up his play from the regular season by averaging 20.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists, and 3.2 steals.

    After his good performance, he was selected by the NBA head coaches to be a Western Conference reserve for the 2011 NBA All-Star Game.

    He finished that season with averages of 21.9 points, 8.2 assists, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.9 steals. Later on, in the next year, he was again selected for the 2012 NBA All-Star Game and finished that season with an average of 23.6 points, 5.5 assists, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.7 steals.

    In April 2013, Russell had an injury, and he was declared out for the rest of the playoffs. He returned to the game in December 2013 after missing the first two games of the 2013–14 season.

    Even after recovering from an injury, he was still able to remain competitive. Furthermore, he helped the Thunder to win the final two games of the 2014–15 season.

    In 2016, Russell was voted to start in his first All-Star Game 2016, and in that year, he also earned his second MVP award.

    During the 2016 season, Thunder goes up 3–1 in the series. But in the playoff, they were defeated 4–3 by the Warriors.

    In August 2016, Russell signed a three-year extraction contract of $85.7 Million with Thunder. Moreover, after 41 games of the season, he was averaging 30.8 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 10.5 assists per game.

    Professional Career From (2017-Present)

    In June 2017, Russell got the NBA Most Valuable Player Award at the first-ever NBA Awards Show. Moreover, in September 2017, he signed a five-year extension contract of $205 million with Thunder.

    However, his team, Thunder, bowed out of the playoffs with a 4–2 defeat. In January 2018, he received his eighth career All-Star selection by being named a Western Conference reserve.

    However, during the 2018-2019 season for the third time in a row, Thunder got eliminated in the first round. In July 2019, Russell was traded to team Houston Rockets for All-Star Chris Paul.

    Moreover, in January 2020, he became the third player in NBA history to have 19,000 points, 6,000 rebounds, and 7,000 assists.

    However, the 2019-2020 NBA season got suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Moreover, in July 2020, he tested positive for COVID-19.

    But he recovered after a month and joined his team for the league’s restart. Russell averaged that season with 17.9 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 4.6 assists which is the worst of his career.

    For the 2020-2021 season, he was traded to the Washington Wizards for John Wall. The Wizards finished that season with a 34–38 record.

    Later on, in 2021, he was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. It was his fourth team in three years. However, during his first season with Laker, he received criticism for his perceived poor quality of play.

    He replied to the critics by saying they are only looking at the stat sheet and not his overall play on the court. Russell’s final contract for 2022–23 is $47 million.
