He was born on 23 August 1948 in Joliet, Illinois. He has grown up in German American family. Rudy has attended Joliet Catholic High School.
However, he was not good at studies mainly due to dyslexia. But he plays football for the famous local football coach Gordie Gillespie.
After completing school, he joined the United States Navy and served as Yeoman for two years. Later on, he even worked in a power plant for the next two years.
Then he applied for Notre Dame but his application was rejected due to low high school grades. So he then enrolled himself in Holy Cross College.
But after two years, on his fourth try, his application was finally accepted at Notre Dame. During this time, he was studying at Holy Cross and even found out that he had dyslexia.

In College, Rudy wishes to play for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team. Even though he is undersized he got a place on the Notre Dame scout team by doing a lot of hard work.
At that time, his coach was Merv Johnson. After the end of the 1974 season, Rudy finally got an opportunity to be a part of the game as a defensive end against Georgia Tech on 8 November 1975.
Rudy played for three plays including a kickoff, an incomplete pass, and the game’s final play. Moreover, after the end of the match, Rudy’s teammates carry him off the field and he became the first player in Norte Dame history to receive this kind of honor.
