Initially, he reported to Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training, where he graduated from BUD/S class 208. In 2013, he told a newspaper that he was SEAL Team Six’s “lead paratrooper” in the rescue of Richard Phillips from the Maersk Alabama hijacking.
Moreover, he also claims that he helps in rescuing SEAL Marcus Luttrell in Afghanistan. However, the former commander of SEAL Team Six denied his claims and said that Robert’s specific role on any of these missions is irrelevant because everything we do is as a team.
During his years of service, Robert received various medals, including two Silver Stars, four Bronze Star Medals, a Joint Service Commendation Medal, and two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals.
From 1996 to 2001, he served with SEAL Teams Two, then from 2001 to 2004 with SEAL Teams Four. Later on, from 2004 to 2012, he served with SEAL Teams Six.
After this, he attained the rank of senior chief petty officer. In August 2012, almost after 16 years, he was discharged from the Navy.

Killing Osama Bin Laden
In 2013 during an interview, Robert stated that he had killed Osama Bin Laden during Operation Neptune Spear. This news escalated quickly, and later on, various government officials and people gave different opinions.
One of Robert’s fellow SEALs, Matt Bissonnette, claims that an unnamed man actually fired the killing shots. Moreover, another former SEAL Team 6 member said in an interview that when Robert arrived at Bin Laden, he was already bleeding on the ground and possibly dead after being shot in the chest and leg by the lead assaulter during the raid.
As of now, the United States Government has neither confirmed nor denied O’Neill’s claims. Once this news came out in public in 2015, Robert and his family were allegedly threatened by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.
