He was born on 2 May 1987, in Plum, a suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was born to Tim and Sally McAfee. Pat also has a sibling named Jason McAfee.
Pat has attended Plum High School. In school, he played soccer, volleyball, and football. Moreover, he received collegiate interest in all three.
During his senior year, he borrowed $100 from a friend to play poker at an illegal club and then turned that $100 into $1400.

Pat started his college career in 2005 as a freshman at West Virginia. During that season, he had 70 Kickoffs with 20 touchbacks. Later on, during the 2006 Sophomore season, the team initially had losses but then won 10 games.
