He was born on 2 January 1935 in Bandung, West Java, Dutch East Indies, which is currently known as Indonesia. Lolo is the ninth child of Martodihardjo.
His father was an employee at a mining office in Yogyakarta. Moreover, his eldest brother and father were killed during the Indonesian National Revolution.
Lolo has done his bachelor’s in geography from Gadjah Mada University, in Yogyakarta. Later on, he even did M.A. in geography from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 1964.

Lolo Soetoro Career
He has served as a geologist in the Indonesian Army Topographic Service. He basically helped the Indonesian government to map Western New Guinea.
Furthermore, in 1965, he even served as the colonel of the Indonesian armed forces. In 1970, he got a job at Union Oil Company, and later on, he even worked at the mapmaking company Dinas Topografi.

Lolo has married twice. Firstly, on 15 March 1965, he got married to divorced Ann Dunham, whom he met at the University of Hawaii, where they are students. During that time, Ann was the mother of a child named Barack Obama, the 44th President of the United States.
After the marriage, they lived in Menteng Dalam village in South Jakarta for two and half years, where Ann worked as the assistant director of the Indonesia-America Friendship Institute.
Later on, in 1970, he moved to a rented house. Furthermore, on 15 August 1970, the couple was blessed by a daughter named Maya Kasandra Soetoro.
However, on 6 November 1980, the couple got divorced. They divorced because Lolo became interested in West culture while Ann was more interested in Indonesian culture.
His second marriage was with Erna Kustina in 1980. Together they have two children a son named Yusuf Aji Soetoro and a girl named Rahayu Nurmaida Soetoro.
