Early Career
From 1986 to 1988, while studying, she worked as a systems engineer for IBM Canada’s Science Engineering. Then in 1991, for one year, she joined the science and communication department at the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory in Switzerland.
In 1992, she returned to Canada and joined the Speech Research Group of Bell-Northern Research in Montreal. Here she works on a project in telephone speech comprehension using computer voice recognition.

In 1992, Julie was selected by the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) to work as an astronaut. Initially, she worked as a technical advisor for the Mobile Servicing System.
In 1993, she established the Human-Computer Interaction Group at the Canadian Astronaut Program. After some time, she obtained her commercial pilot license, and in 1996 she even became a certified deep-sea diving suit operator.

In 1996, she became part of the STS-96 crew and flew on the Space Shuttle Discovery from 27 May to 6 June. During this mission, her primary work was to operate the Canadarm robotic arm from the space station.
Furthermore, from 2000 to 2007, she worked as the capsule communicator at the Mission Control Center in Houston.
In 2009, she again visited the space station as a mission specialist on the STS-127 mission. From 15 July to 21 July, she flew on the Space Shuttle Endeavour. During this mission, she was the flight engineer and led the robotic operator.
