He was born on 1 February 1979 in Green Hill, Alabama. His father, Mike Isbell, is a painter, and his mother, Angela Hill Barnett, is an interior designer.

Fame Studios and Drive-By Truckers
Jason has been interested in music since childhood, and when he was a teenager, many artists took him under their wing, including bassist David Hood.
When Jason was 21, he got a publishing deal with FAME Studios. He worked with Fame Studios for 15 years through his solo album Southeastern.
In 2001, when he was 22, he joined the band Drive-By Truckers. From 2003 to 2006, he recorded many songs for the band’s three albums Decoration Day, 2004’s The Dirty South, and 2006’s A Blessing and a Curse.
The title track of the Decoration Day album was based on a true story about Jason’s family members. After working with the band for six years, on 5 April 2007, Jason announced that he was no longer part of the Drive-By Truckers band.
The 400 Unit
In February 2009, Jason and The 400 Unit band released their first eponymous album with Lightning Rod Records. Later in April 2011, the band released their second album, Here We Rest.
One of the singles Alabama Pines from the album was named Song of the Year at the 2012 Americana Music Awards.
In June 2017, the band released its third album, The Nashville Sound. For this album, the band won the Grammy Award for Best Americana Album, and Jason won the Grammy Award for Best American Roots Song.
In May 2020, the band released its fourth album, Reunions. During the 2020 United States presidential election, Jason announced that if Joe Biden won the election, he would record a charity album.
When Joe Biden won the election, he started recording the album Georgia Blue which was released in October 2021.
Solo Career
In July 2007, he released his first solo album, Sirens of the Ditch. Then in June 2013, he released his fourth solo album, Southeastern.
The album was critically and commercially successful. In 2022, it was certified Gold by RIAA. Moreover, the album won the Best Album of the Year Award at the 2014 Americana Music Awards, and Jason was named the Best Artist of the Year.
The album’s single Cover Me Up was also named Best Song of the Year. In July 2015, he released his fifth album, Something More Than Free.
