Donovan’s full name is Donovan Anthony Bailey. Moreover, he once held a World Record for 100 meters in sprinting.
Donovan recorded a time of 9.84 seconds to win the gold medal at the 1996 Olympic Games. Furthermore, he was the first Canadian to break the 10-second barrier in the 100m race.

He was born on 16 December 1967 in Manchester Parish, Jamaica. His father is George Bailey, and his mother is Daisy Bailey. Moreover, he has five siblings Arlene Duncan, O’Neil Bailey, Michael Bailey, Glenroy Bailey, and Wilburn Bailey.
Donovan has attended Mount Olivet Primary School, and before going to school, he takes care of his family’s chickens, pigs, and goats.
Donovan was very fast as a young boy and started showing his athletic skills in grade one. At the age of 12, he immigrated to Canada and took admission to Queen Elizabeth Park High School in Oakville, Ontario.

Donovan Bailey Career
Career as Sprinter From (1990 – 1996)
In 1990, Donovan decided to start racing professionally after watching the 1990 Canadian Track and Field Championships.
While watching, he realized that most of the competing men were those he had beaten in high school. While working as a stockbroker, he starts training as a 100m sprinter part-time.
In 1991, he won the 60 meters at the Ontario Indoor Championships and the 1991 Pan American Games in Havana, Cuba.
Later on, in the next year, Donovan finished second in the 100m at the national championships. From 1993 to 1994, he competed for Fenerbahçe Athletics.
Moreover, at that time, he even won the bronze in the 100m and a silver in the 200m at the 1993 national championships.
During the 1994 Francophone Games in Paris, he won the silver in the 100m and gold in the 4 × 100 meters. Later on, he won a gold medal in the 4×100m at the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, British Columbia.
Even after giving a great performance at the national level, he was only chosen as an alternate for the 4x100m at the 1993 World Championships in Stuttgart.
But later on, Donovan’s complaint was listened to by the coach, and appropriate actions were taken. In 1995, Donovan made history by breaking the 10-second barrier for the first time in the 100m.
Furthermore, he became the 18th man and the 2nd Canadian to do that. In the same year, he won the gold medal at the World Championships in Gothenburg.
In 1996, Donovan broke the indoor 50 m world record during a competition in Reno, Nevada. Moreover, in the same year, he was even selected to represent Canada at the 1996 Summer Olympics.
Career as Sprinter From (1997 – 2001)
In May 1997, he raced against Michael Johnson in a 150 m race at Toronto’s in order to determine who the World’s fastest man was.
Soon Donovan began performing television promotions and gave himself the title of World’s Fastest Man. Later on, in the 1997 World Championships in Athens, he attempted to defend his title.
However, he was beaten, and he had to settle for the silver medal. But he was able to defend Canada’s 4x100m title in 37.86 seconds.
During the 1998 Goodwill Games in New York, Donovan and the 4 x 100-meter Canadian relay team won a silver medal.
Later on, in the next year, he won a silver medal with the relay team at the 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg. Donovan was also a part of the Canadian 4 x 100-meter relay team for the 1999 World Championships in Seville.
However, the team was disqualified in the first round of heats. In 2000, Donovan took part in the 2000 Summer Olympics. But he was dropped out of the round because he was suffering from pneumonia.
After the World Championships in Edmonton in 2001, Donovan took retirement from the sport.
Other Work
After making a good career in racing, Donovan started his own company DBX Sport Management. The company helps amateur athletes in finding ways to promote themselves.
Moreover, he also started a sports injury clinic in Oakville, Ontario. In August 2008, he started working as a track commentator for CBC Television at the 2008 Summer Olympics.
Later on, Donovan returned as the track analyst for CBC’s coverage for the 2016 Summer Olympics. In 2016 he was even made a member of the Order of Ontario. In 2022, he was named an officer to the Order of Canada.
