He was born to Walter Leon “Doc” Weaver and Lenna Leora on 4 June 1924 in Joplin, Missouri. For several years, he lived in Shreveport, Louisiana, and then even moved to Manteca, California, for some time.
Since childhood, Dennis has wanted to be an actor. He attended the Joplin Junior College and later went to the University of Oklahoma at Norman, where he studied drama.

Early Career
During World War II, Dennis served as a pilot in the United States Navy. He operates the Grumman F4F Wildcat fighter aircraft.
After the war, he tried out for the 1948 U.S. Olympic team in the decathlon. However, he finished in the sixth position, and only the top 3 were selected.
After not performing well in the Olympic trials, he decided to stay in New York and make his career in acting.
Acting Career From (1950 – 1963)
Dennis’s first appearance was in the 1950 play Come Back, Little Sheba. Later on, he enrolled himself in the Actors Studio.
At the beginning of his career, he wasn’t making much money. So he supported his family by doing various odd jobs such as selling vacuum cleaners, tricycles, and women’s hosiery.
At Actors Studio, he met Shelley Winters, who helped him get a contract from Universal Studios in 1952. Moreover, in the same year, he made his film debut with the movie The Redhead from Wyoming.
Later on, for the next three years, he appeared in several movies, but he was not able to make his name. So he continues doing his odd jobs.
He got his big break when he got the role of Chester Goode in the tv series GunSmoke. The series became the longest-running live-action series in the United States from 1955 to 1975.

Acting Career From (1964 to 2006)
From 1964 to 1965, he plays the role of a veterinary physician in the comedy-drama, Kentucky Jones. In 1966, he played an essential role in the movie Duel at Diablo.
Later for the next two years, he appeared in the family series, Gentle Ben. In 1970, Dennis played the lead role in McCloud.
Moreover, he even received two Emmy Award nominations for his role in this series. In 1971, he appeared in Steven Spielberg’s directed movie Duel.
During the 1980s, Dennis appeared in two series, Stone and Buck James. However, both of them lasted for only one season.
