He was born on 26 December 1986 in Buffalo, New York. His father, Gordon Gronkowski, has played as an offensive guard at Syracuse for three years.

College Football
Chris accepted a football scholarship from the University of Maryland. However, he was redshirted in 2005, and then in 2007, he was transferred to the University of Arizona.
During his sophomore year, he played as a linebacker but did not record any stats. In 2008 during his fourth junior year, he started 7 games and made 8 receptions for 198 yards and 3 touchdowns.
In 2009, Chris started 7 out of 13 games, tallying 4 catches for 20 yards and 2 carries for one yard. Chris finished his college career starting 15 out of 26 games, collecting 12 receptions for 218 yards, 2 carries for one yard, and 3 receiving touchdowns.
Professional Football
Chris remained undrafted during the 2010 NFL Draft, but later in April, he was signed by the Dallas Cowboys. He played his first NFL game on 19 September against the Chicago Bears. In that, he made a one-yard pass and a touchdown.
When Cowboys released Anderson, Chris became the full-time starter at fullback. In the 2010 season, Chris played 14 games out of 16 and even started 7 times as a rookie.
However, he was inconsistent as a lead blocker. He made only 5 carries for 17 yards, 7 receptions for 35 yards, and one touchdown, due to which he was waived from the team in September 2011.
But Indianapolis Colts claimed Chris off waivers. In October 2011, he was placed on the injured reserve list due to a pectoral injury.
In May 2012, Indianapolis traded him with Denver Broncos in exchange for cornerback Cassius Vaughn. Chris played in 14 games as a backup and made one reception for 11 yards with no rushing attempts.
When the season ended, he was dropped from the team. In April 2013, he was signed with the San Diego Chargers as a free agent.
However, In august, he was placed on the injured reserve list due to an ankle injury, but just after 3 days, he was waived with an injury settlement.
