    Ben’s full name is Benjamin Luke Cousins. He has played for the West Coast and Richmond in the Australian Football League.

    Moreover, in his 12 years career, he played 238 games with West Coast. He even co-produced a documentary film titled Such is Life: The Troubled Times of Ben Cousins.

    Ben Cousins Early Life

    He was born on 30 June 1978 in Geelong, Victoria. His father Bryan was an Australian rules footballer who had played for the Geelong Football Club in the Victorian Football League, and his mother is Stephanie.

    When Ben was 18 months old, he moved with his family to Perth, Australia. Ben has three younger siblings named Matthew, Sophie, and Melanie.

    Ben has played junior football for the Bull Creek-Leeming Junior Football Club and Wesley College private school.

    Moreover, in 1995 during his last year at college, he was recruited by the East Fremantle Football Club for the West Australian Football League. So for that season, he played for both his school and East Fremantle.

    While Ben was in school, three AFL teams started competing to draft him under the father-son rule. Later on, he joined the West Coast as he wanted to remain based in Western Australia.

    Ben Cousins Career

    Career From (1996 – 2004)

    At the age of 17, Ben played his first AFL match and kicked two goals for West Coast against Geelong. Moreover, he won the Norwich Rising Star Award for his debut season in 1996.

    Ben’s popularity will continue to increase in the next season. In 1999, the International Management Group said they would like to sign Ben because he is a good player and has excellent marketing potential.

    In 1998, he was selected for the All-Australian Team. Furthermore, in 1999 he played his first finals game against Western Bulldogs.

    Later on, in 2000, he signed a new three-year contract worth $1 Million with the West Coast Eagles. In 2001, he became the co-captain of the team.

    Ben was selected in the All-Australian Team continuously in 2001 and 2002. Furthermore, in 2002, he even became the team captain and remained the captain of the team until 2006.

    In early 2003 he got an ankle injury, but still, he continuously played for the next five weeks by taking painkillers. Later on, in 2004, he injured his back, due to which he had to miss seven games. 

    Career From (2005 – 2006)

    In July 2005, Ben played his 200th game, and West Coast showed the video clip of his ten years career at the end of the game.

    Ben was one of the youngest West Coast players to reach 200 games and the 14th youngest in the history of the AFL/VFL.

    Moreover, in 2005, he won the AFL’s highest individual player award, Brownlow Medal. However, he could not attend the ceremony as he was busy preparing for West Coast’s Grand Final match.

    But they lost the Grand Finals by four points to Syndey. In that league, Ben had 612 disposals and 24 goals, due to which he was ranked in the top five of the league in nine of the 12 categories.

    In February 2006, he resigned from the team captaincy. Later on, in May 2006, he signed a new three-year contract with the West Coast.

    Furthermore, in September 2006, West Coast won the Grand Final by defeating Sydney by one point.

    Career From (2007 – 2010)

    In March 2007, Ben was indefinitely suspended by the West Coast after missing two training sessions. Later on, it was confirmed by the club that Ben had a substance abuse problem. After returning from four weeks of rehabilitation for substance abuse, Ben was offered an amended contract by West Coast.

    But this contract contains strict conditions, including repaying the cost of rehab and undertaking regular drug tests. In June 2007, Ben got clearance from the AFL to resume training with the West Coast Eagles.

    However, during training, he got injured, which delayed his comeback in the game. In October 2007, his car was stopped and searched in Northbridge.

    Moreover, he was arrested for drug possession and refusing to submit to a blood test. After the arrest, the club sacked him the next day, due to which he was no longer a registered AFL player. Later on, the AFL commission even banned him from playing senior football for 12 months.

    In November 2008, the AFL commission allowed Ben to play for the AFL football 2009. But on the condition that he needs to appear for the drug tests.

    Several teams showed interest in drafting Ben for 2009, including Collingwood Football Club, St Kilda Football Club, and Brisbane Lions.

    But still, he was not selected in the AFL national draft. Later on, Richmond Football Club approached the AFL Commission for approval to move injured senior players with Ben. 

    Commission approves their request, and Ben starts his training with the team. In August 2010, after weeks of speculation by the media, he announced his retirement in front of his family and a vast crowd.

    While giving the retirement speech, he thanked everyone who had assisted him in his career and even acknowledged and apologized for his encounter with drugs and the law.

    Currently, Ben is unmarried, and there is no information available about whom he is dating currently. But there are some rumors that he is dating Kelly Fergus because of their together appearance at the Brownlow Medal ceremony.

    In the past, Ben is in a relationship with Maylea Tinecheff. But the couple got separated because of Ben’s drug problem, due to which he even destroyed his successful career in a blink of a time. Moreover, together they even have a son named Bobby Ernest Cousins, who was born in September 2011.
